U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the population of older adults is increasing while younger groups are shrinking. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of Americans 65 and up grew by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease among those under 18. The nation’s older population has expanded significantly over the last 100 years, climbing from 4.9 million in 1920 to above 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study finds that almost half of individuals in this age group—around 28 million—could require long-term services and supports, and more than one-third may eventually need nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
