U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the national population of older adults continues to rise as youth numbers lessen. From 2020 through 2024, citizens age 65 and older grew by 13%, while the under-18 population dropped 1.7%. The country’s older adult segment has surged in the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to beyond 61 million as of 2024.
A study published in 2021 found that about half of older U.S. adults—approximately 28 million—may one day require long-term support services. The research also estimates more than a third might ultimately enter a nursing home.
